Producers Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films have seemingly mastered the formula for Hindi blockbusters. Their latest release, Stree 2, enjoyed a spectacular debut on Thursday, August 15, earning over $9.6 million globally on its opening day. In India alone, the film achieved a record-breaking $7.7 million in gross collections. On its second day, Friday (a weekday), Stree 2 is projected to surpass $13 million worldwide.
These numbers include the paid previews held the previous day, Wednesday, which contributed over $1 million to the total. On its opening day in India, the film netted $6.5 million, with paid previews accounting for a significant portion of the $7.7 million total.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 is the sequel to the 2018 horror-comedy Stree, which was a surprising hit at the box office. The sequel features returning stars Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurana.
With its impressive opening, Stree 2 has claimed the title of the top Hindi film debut of 2024. The horror-comedy outperformed other major releases such as Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone’s Fighter and the Hindi adaptation of the Telugu sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD. Stree 2 also stands as the second-highest opening Bollywood film of all time, following Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, which earned $8.9 million on its debut. Additionally, it marks the biggest opening ever for stars Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao.
As the fourth installment in Maddock Films’ supernatural universe, Stree 2 continues the story of village boy Vicky (Rao) and his friends as they confront a new threat: a headless spirit targeting modern women. Building on the success of the 2018 hit Stree, the producers have previously released two other horror-comedies—Bhediya starring Varun Dhawan in 2022, and the recent Munjya.
